LonWorld® 2004 Expo and Conference in Shanghai, China Breaks Attendance Records
The annual LonWorld Expo and Conference had record setting attendance in Shanghai, China last month. LonWorld 2004, held in Asia for the first time, received enthusiastic support from attendees in China, Asia and across the globe.
Conference Summary
The two-day conference attended by over 400 people kicked-off with opening remarks from several Chinese government officials. The conference started with a traditional ribbon cutting ceremony with representatives from Echelon, LonMark® International, and government officials representing several Chinese commissions.
Attendees of the first day of the conference heard from a number of impressive speakers including Tracy Markie, Chairman of the Board of LonMark International; a representative from Ministry of Construction; Seungsoo Park, Vice President Marketing Strategy with Samsung Electronics; Cai Jianhua, Vice General Engineer, Shanghai Science & Technology Commission; Zhou Hanmin, Vice Director, Leader’s Group, 2010 Shanghai World Expo Office; Ichirou Oomori, General Manager Design Department Mechanical Systems, Mori Building Co., Ltd.; and Meifa Chen, Chief Engineer, Shanghai Water Authorities.
Throughout the two-day conference attendees were able to attend talks delivered on over 40 topics including intelligent buildings, intelligent street lighting, home automation, elevators, metering and power management, water treatment, and transportation solutions. Other sessions were hosted on new technology developments such as power line communications, UPnP™ technology application development, internet gateways, installing and monitoring automation systems.

Exhibition Summary
The LonWorld 2004 exhibition was very crowded as over
2,100 attendees streamed through the exhibition area. The LonMark
Korea, China and Japan pavilions dramatically showed the excitement
and support for the LonWorks platform throughout Asia as they never
had a moment of rest throughout the two day exhibit. Kyon Dong Networks,
Nico, and Samsung Electronics showed that the home automation market,
long promised, is finally here – albeit in Asia. The three companies
showed the world’s most advanced home automation systems featuring
networked appliances, gas, water and energy monitoring, lighting
controls, blind controls, security and more. The overwhelming response
by attendees was that the future of home automation is no further
away than a trip to Asia.

Multi-Vendor Installation Award
Following a LonWorld tradition, show organizers announced the winner of the 2004 Best Multi-Vendor Installation Award Winner. An impressive collection of nominees made selecting a winner a challenge for the judging committee. Nominations were received from Asia, Europe and North America compounding the difficulty of the judges task. Eventually a winner was chosen for the Best Multi-Vendor Installation Award - Ove Arup & Partners and Pfizer Ltd. for Pfizer's new pharmaceutical research laboratory in Sandwich, Kent, UK. Congratulations to Ove Arup and Pfizer for a job well done.

Off-Site LonMark System Tour
Following LonWorld 2004, 50 people attended the site tour hosted by Shanghai ChangXiang Computer Ltd. in the Shanghai area. The new building under construction to house the Shanghai ChangXiang Computer headquarters will have a state-of-the-art automation system designed and integrated by NTT DATA of Japan.
  
UPnP™ Forum Summary
The UPnP™ Forum and UPnP Implementers Corporation made two significant visits to Asia this October to present vital information about the UPnP technology and standards. More than 200 technology professionals in Shanghai and Taipei participated in the 2004 "Connect with UPnP Technology" Summits. Enthusiastic attendees heard from member company representatives and guest speakers on topics ranging from updates on the progress and development of the UPnP standards and UPnP logo certification process, to Intel's Vision for Digital Technologies in the Home. They were also treated to an exciting real-time demonstration of various applications of UPnP AV technology. "The level of interest and excitement about the UPnP technology in Asia was impressive," said Toby Nixon, President of the UPnP Steering Committee. "It's great to see so many companies embracing the standards. We look forward to hosting more educational events here."
